DAN LIPTON – BREATHING IN

Dan Lipton has a sound that conjures up the songwriting and melodies of Tom Petty, Neil Young , and Paul Simon.  His music has a 90s rock alternative pop appeal.  Lipton maintains a rustic folk undertone while naturally writing from the heart.  In February, Lipton released his latest project Breathing In. One can hear his inner and outer journey, his struggles, his triumphs, his depth and his wisdom.  The album tells a story of life, love, loss, giving us a glimpse into who Dan Lipton is -and it seems we ought to know.

There is a lingering loneliness permeating within the lyrics and vocals of Lipton. His music evokes a deep feeling that he’s searching for something. At times his songs sound as if he has captured whatever it is he’s searching for.  But then in the span of another song, it feels he has lost it all yet again. During “Wings of A Crow”, Lipton sings:

You and I know we’re the only one’s out on this road
In a moonlit car, let the night unfold
We can fly over mountains, on the wing of a crow
We’ll be the only ones out on this road

I’m not saying nothin’ you don’t already know
This truck will burn out of gas in a mile or so
The heat’s finally breaking, the suns sinking low
Looks like we’ll be sleeping alone on this road

You and I know we’re the only one’s out on this road
In a moonlit car, let the night unfold
We can fly over mountains, on the wing of a crow
We’ll be the only ones out on this road

We drove down to town the sun beaming down
Miles we’ve come miles we’ll go
Like a boy with no balance like a bird in the night
We drink till were sober we’ll sing till it’s light

You and I know we’re the only one’s out on this road
In a moonlit car, let the night unfold
We can fly over mountains, on the wing of a crow
We’ll be the only ones out on this road

There’s a bittersweet feeling admits this song. A beautiful setting, he sings of two people on a journey only the two of them can take and though there may be worlds outside their enclosed world, all they have is this world they’re in together. It’s a beautiful moment where one almost feels like the other person Lipton is singing to.

Songs like “Whiskey and Wine”, “Come on Georgia”, “Hudson River Line”, and “Wings Of A Crow” truly stand out.  Lipton is a true songwriter.  There isn’t a bad song on the album, each track is cohesive and masterfully flows into the next.  Lipton is an artist to follow as he has a story to tell – one worth imbibing and listening to.
